Road Trip Wednesday is a “Blog Carnival,” where YA Highway‘s contributors post a weekly writing- or reading-related question that begs to be answered. In the comments, you can hop from destination to destination and get everybody’s unique take on the topic.
This week’s topic:
What was the best book you read in August?
Without a doubt, Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas.
After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin. Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king’s council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she’ll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom. Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she’s bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her… but it’s the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best. Then one of the other contestants turns up dead… quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.
I gotta say though, I prefer the UK cover:
I write UF and PNR and contemporary fantasy and plain contemporary, but my dream is to write high fantasy. I love Kristin Cashore’s books and now I’m in love with Sarah J. Maas’ books too. One of my best friends, my “Megan”, has read everything I wrote. EVERYTHING! Even my very first manuscript (poor girl, I know). Once, I wrote a high fantasy. Accordingly to my “Megan” it is my most creative book so far, the one with a very different story and twists.
Anyway, if you haven’t read Throne of Glass yet, YOU HAVE TO!
What was the best book YOU read in August?
Cheers,
Lynn Rush
I prefer the UK cover too! Way more intense!!! :)
Colin
Oh yes, totally agree that the UK cover is better. Much more menacing! I’ve not read this book–I haven’t read a lot of (perhaps any) YA fantasy. I’ll bear this one in mind when I get around to sampling the genre. Thanks, Juliana. :)
Julie Glover
Yes, I definitely like that UK cover! Thanks for the reading recommendation. I need to catch up with a few books and then add more great reads to my list.
Suzanne van Rooyen
Oh I really need to read this! Love that UK cover – reminds me more of manga.
Crystal Schubert
I have become more and more interested in fantasy, lately. Spurred by Cashore’s series, which I agree is totally lovable. But you know, I initially thought this one was paranormal when I saw everyone raving about it. Now that I know it’s not I might have to pick it up. Thanks for the rec! :)
Stephanie Scott
I definitely prefer the UK cover with the anime slant! The US version looks so wholesome in comparison. Strange considering how violent our culture is, but that’s another discussion altogether.
I’ve heard good things about this book.
Alex J. Cavanaugh
Both are nice artwork, but the second one is badass!
Jaime
Oh, wow! That UK cover is fantastic! I think I much prefer it to the US/Canadian cover. I’d love to see more covers like this, especially when the girl on the cover looks as badass as this. THRONE OF GLASS is on my TBR list already because it just sounds so darn good. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it! :)
Alison Miller
Given that I LOVE Graceling, I think I would really like this one. Thanks for the recommendation!

Second review for Throne of Glass. I am going to have to read it now.
Robin Moran
Definitely love the UK cover more! It sounds like an interesting book. :)
