Hey guys!
How are you all doing? Everyone still kicking ROW’s butt? Well, not me. I feel like I slacked this week a little.
Note: post written on Thursday night and scheduled to go live on Sunday morning. Friday my parents will be around and Sat and Sun are for family.
My goals:
- Participate of the EditPalooza workshop offered by Savvy Authors from Jan/2 to Feb/4. (I’ve been warned this is super hard work and consumes many hours of the day. Let’s see if I can keep up!)
- Write a novelette (10-15,000 words), revise it and sub it (due Feb 1st).
- Write a novella (20-40,000 words), revise it and sub it (due April 1st).
- Write a novel (or get as far as I can with it). Actually I’m thinking about re-writing some of my old novels, the ones I wrote when I just started down this path. The stories are good, but the writing isn’t lol I keep saying I need to re-write them, so this might be the time to choose one and get it over with.
- Read 2 book every 3 weeks.
- Social network: tweet, comment on blogs, and blog at least once a week (not counting #ROW80 checkins).
Confession time. I’m losing the interest in writing shorter pieces, so I might cross the novelette and the novella from my list. I just need more 2k words to finish the novelette, but the end is so … simple, I think. My problem is that I love a good, long, complicated plot and when I have to come up with shorter, simpler stuff, it doesn’t happen too well.
Some other things are happening here (I’ll tell you all about it next Sunday), and I think I’ll cut the novelette and the novella form my goal. I know, I know, I was almost done with the novelette, but I’m just not feeling it. So, there you have it.
Social Media: All done (or more).
Reading: Revision and Self-Editing by James Scott Bell for the workshop. We’ve read about 10 chapters so far.
Finally finished Across the Universe by Beth Revis on Sat.
EditPalooza: Working on Scene Structure, Middles, and Endings.
Writing: Much slower than my usual routine, but I think the workshop has me compromised. Mon = 1079 words. Tue = 3482 words. Wed = wrote only 500 words. Not in the mood. Thur = wrote another 500 words only. Then start critiquing my CP’s manuscript. Frid, Sat, Sun = with family.
How are you guys doing? Hope all is well!
If you want to check on the other members, you can hop on ROW80 blog and click on the post for today’s check-in ;)
Cheers,
PS: guys, like usual, I’m gonna be out of town on Sunday and commenting on your blogs through my phone would be a pain in the *ss. So, I’ll stop by on Monday, okay? Thanks!

I think we all of a pile of material we’ve fallen out of love with. It happens, the bad part is when we struggle to keep it alive. Perhaps putting it away for awhile will lead to a solution. Good on the word count, you did it even when you weren’t feeling it and that is a sign of a pro. Nice job.
Enjoy the family time and have a great week, Juliana :)
Juliana
Oh, you should see my pule of material I fell out of love with lol
Thanks, Gene.
Nicole Basaraba
I have to agree with Gene, you are still getting a lot of writing done. Not to mention you’re already in the editing stages. I’ve been getting a small inkling to attempt something shorter, either a short story or novella. Could you offer any recommendations on craft book for this?
Juliana
Actually, Nicole, I searched for novella craft books and couldn’t find anything that seemed good enough …
If I find it, though, I’ll let you know ;)
Stacy Green
You’re still getting a lot done, especially with the workshop. That’s very time consuming. And don’t feel badly if you have to make some changes to your plans – that’s what writing’s all about:)
Juliana
Yup. Thanks, Stacy!
Alex J. Cavanaugh
Hope you had a good time with your parents.
Only one day a week for social networking? Wow, if I limited mine to one day that is literally all I would do the entire day.
Juliana
Thanks, Alex! I did!
Em
I concur with everyone above, you are still getting lots of writing done! I can imagine it is hard to persevere with something you aren’t into and who is to say you won’t want to go back to it at some point? Popping it away for a while won’t hurt.
Hope you have a lovely weekend and the next week sees even more writing!
Juliana
Here here to more writing lol. Thanks, Em!
Ghenet Myrthil
I think it’s totally acceptable to put aside something you’re not interested in anymore. You have to love what you’re writing, so if you don’t like something, move on and don’t feel bad about it.
Juliana
Yup. Those are my thoughts exactly ;)
Suzanne Lilly
It’s okay to abandon things that aren’t working. Perhaps at a later date the shine will come back to it for you. Enjoy your weekend family time!
Juliana
Thanks, Suzanne!
Karen McFarland
Hi Julian! I do hope you’ve had a great time with your family! I am new to ROW80 and was wondering through the ROW hashtag and thought I’d drop by to introduce myself. You’ve got wonderful goals and seem to be doing very well meeting them and adjusting when needed. That’s fantastic. Keep it up. It was very nice to meet you! :)
Juliana
Hi, Karen, welcome!
Thanks for the support ;)
Natalie Hartford
Hope you’ve been rocking it out with your family! Woot woot!
I think adjusting your goals as you go along is great. I am with most of the others, if your interest has slacked on the shorter stuff, set it aside. You never know if/when you’ll ever get back to it. You are still writing up some IMPRESSIVE word counts every day…wowzers!! And working on something more substantial and lengthy with a complicated plot sounds fahhhbulous!!! Exciting!!
ENJOY your family time and we’ll see you around the blogosphere this week. Happy writing…
Juliana
Woot! Thanks, Natalie!
I love your energy and kind words ;)
Ryan King
Aww. I hate that you’re so close to being done with the novelette and walking away. Promise that you’ll come back to it later and finish it okay? Aww. You’re not slacking. The week just wasn’t going as smooth as it normally did. No shame in that. I hope next week is much better!
Juliana
I know! I feel so bad about it! lol
I promise I’ll try to finish it soon then …
Gina
I went to a workshop with James Scott Bell yesterday! He was terrific :)
Hope you have a great writing week ahead of you!
NewToWritingGirl
I must say I’m with Ryan, I think its such a shame your leaving the wip when you’re so close to being done. Saying that though, I’d totally do the same!
Well done on your word counts last week – hope you do as well this week :-)
Sharon Howard
You’re doing great, sure the wip is nearly done and leaving it now is a shame, but hey you can always pick up where you left off when you feel like tackling it again, so no biggie! have a great week! :)
Leigh Covington
Oh my gosh girl – you are rocking it! Seriously! Those are amazing goals. I wish I was that motivated and precise in my goal making. Fabulous stuff!
Angela Orlowski-Peart
Adjusting your goals to what feels like the best option is a good idea. You are still getting things done and you can revise your priorities in a month or so again.
The workshop sounds interesting and I might check it out. Have a great time with your family and keep rocking the Row :-)
Fabio Bueno
Hi, Juliana! Some weeks are slower than others, but you’re still writing a lot.
Have a great week and keep rockin’!
